These real life stories are just a few of the ways Big Brothers Big Sisters is changing lives and communities forever.
Big Sister Sherry and Little Sister Elizabeth
Elizabeth and Sherry have been matched for one year in our community based program. Together they like to go on walks, work on arts and crafts and go swimming. In the year that they have been matched they have bonded over their common interests. They both enjoy dancing and singing and Sherry even helped Elizabeth practice for the Juneau Star Search competition, in which she won first place!
Big Brother Denny and Little Brother Derick
Denny and Derick were matched at Riverbend Elementary in February 2007. They meet weekly at school and have become good friends. Sometimes they play Uno and other times they read books. They have been on a whale watching trip and to a Picnic at Sandy Beach this summer with other BBBS matches. Derick thinks the match is “very fun!”
Big Sister Kathy and Little Sister Betty
Kathy and Betty meet at Gastineau Elementary. Kathy said that Betty is happy everyday and that "she is always happy to see me and I sure have fun doing art projects with her." Betty said doing art with Kathy is the best part of her match. Betty's teach wrote, “Kathy Blanc is the best match I have observed in my 10 years of teaching.””.
Big Brother Bob and Little Brother Spencer
Bob and Spencer were originally matched October 31, 2002. Spencer left the state in 2006. In October 2007 Spencer moved back to Juneau. Bob and Spencer decided to be re-matched since they had a very strong match and friendship. Spencer relates that Bob is considerate of others, knows a lot of people, and Bob is a good person. Bob and Spencer like to have dinner together, watch football on TV and go to the movies. They also go skiing, fishing and for walks.
Big Brother Steve and Little Brother Alex
Steve and Alex just celebrated the first year of their match, and they packed it with outdoor adventures. They’ve gone mountain biking, skiing, deer hunting, hiking at the glacier, bird watching, snowshoeing and duck hunting. Steve also has taught Alex about boating, but he says he learns a lot from Alex who is into science and full of facts. Alex’s mom says the friendship is "opening up Alex’s world." Steve says it’s been rewarding to "watch a young person learn all these outdoor skills."
