Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska honors a match that captures the true spirit of mentorship — showing how one caring relationship can spark confidence, resilience, and a bright future.

This year we celebrate Big Brother Jeff and Little Brother Damon, who have been matched since 2023. Their story began when Damon entered the Sync foster care program at age 14. After experiencing the loss of his father and an unstable early childhood, Damon found stability with his foster mom, Leesa. She enrolled him in BBBSAK, hoping he could also find a male mentor to help him build trust, social skills, and a vision for his future.

Jeff was no stranger to the program — he had mentored 15 years earlier and returned after raising his own children, eager to guide another kid.

From the beginning, Jeff and Damon clicked. Their friendship has been full of both fun and growth: celebrating milestones, working on life skills, and even stepping out of comfort zones like singing karaoke side by side.

Jeff has supported Damon through football, ROTC, drill team, and, most importantly, his adoption by Leesa. Beyond their match, Jeff is a dedicated advocate for BBBSAK — volunteering at events, speaking on behalf of the organization, and always offering a helping hand.
