In the meantime, we’re reflecting on one of last year’s most moving matches — Anthony and his Big Brother, DJ, our 2024 Big and Little of the Year. Their story continues to inspire us as we prepare to celebrate the next duo who exemplifies the power of mentorship.

Anthony faced unimaginable loss, losing his biological father in 2016 and his mother in 2019, leaving him to navigate life with his stepfather. Matched with DJ in 2021, he struggled with trauma that showed up as outbursts and difficulty focusing.

Since their match, DJ has been a steady presence in Anthony’s life. They’ve bonded over gaming, movie nights, and long bike rides — shared experiences that opened the door to deeper conversations. Both are artistic and enjoy writing together, and DJ proudly supported Anthony’s essay about his mother. As the Director of Communications at Volunteers of America, DJ even helped launch a partnership between BBBS of Alaska and VOA, while also championing recruitment for new Bigs.

Today, Anthony is thriving in high school, excelling academically and in ROTC. He’s known for his humor, discipline, and resilience. As Anthony said, “I know the program is called Big Brothers Big Sisters. Sometimes it actually feels like he’s really my big brother.”
